Propecia® is a brand name medication used to treat male pattern hair loss. The side effects of the active ingredient in Propecia®, which is called finasteride, include impotence and other sexual problems. A recently released study suggests that the risk of side effects could be higher and could last longer than reported by the manufacturer. In fact, results from the study have raised concerns that the side effects could be permanent for some patients.

If you’re suffering from impotence and have been treated with Propecia®, contact an attorney today to find out if you are eligible for compensation from the manufacturer. In a free and confidential consultation, a lawyer will evaluate your case, discuss your options, and help you seek compensation for your losses.

Propecia® Side Effects

Most of the non-sexual side effects of Propecia® are felt by users who experience allergic reactions. These can include itching, rashes and swelling of the lips and face. Rare cases include breast enlargement, nipple discharge and testicular pain. Sexual side effects of Propecia® use include impotence, low libido and a decrease in the amount of semen produced.

Merck, the manufacturer of Propecia®, claims that erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems are rare and do not persist when the hair loss treatment is discontinued. Results from a new study conducted by a George Washington University professor suggest otherwise. The professor studied a group of Propecia® users who had problems with sexual dysfunction and found that 94 percent of them had a decreased sex drive, 92 percent had problems with erectile dysfunction, and 69 percent had problems with orgasm.

The average duration of Propecia® use by men in the study was 28 months, but the erectile dysfunction and other sexual side effects continued for an average of 40 months and occurred even after they stopped treatment. The study also showed that most of the men experienced more than one sexual side effect.

The manufacturer of Propecia® needs to be held accountable for the side effects associated with the hair loss treatment, especially if the symptoms are persistent. No one who signed up for a hair loss treatment would have done so knowing it could cause a life-time of erectile dysfunction.

If you or someone you love has had problems with sexual function after using Propecia®, you deserve to be compensated. For more information, please contact a Propecia® lawyer today.
