Propecia® - Side Effects, Injuries & Lawsuit Information
Propecia® (Finasteride) is a prescription medication manufactured by Merck & Co. approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce hair loss in men as well as treat an enlarged prostate.
Finasteride is a synthetic 5α-reductase inhibitor. The drug works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is a substance that can shrink hair follicles until they no longer grow hair. Reducing DHT appears to slow down further shrinking of affected hair follicles.
Unfortunately, Propecia® has been associated with causing serious side effects. The more common side effects of Propecia® are felt by users who experience allergic reactions. These can include:
- Runny nose
- Stuffy nose
- Cold sweats
- Bloating (face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet)
- Itchy skin
- Skin rash
- Swelling (lips and face)
- Tingling (hands or feet)
- Rapid weight gain
- Rapid weight loss
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain
More serious but rare Propecia® side effects include breast enlargement, nipple discharge and testicular pain.
Sexual side effects of Propecia® use include impotence, low libido and a decrease in the amount of semen produced. Merck, the drug's manufacturer, claims that erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems are rare and do not persist when the hair loss treatment is discontinued. However, studies have concluded that not only can sexual side effects continue after stopping treatment, the side effects may in fact be permanent.
The men who participated in the study used Propecia® for an average of 28 months, but experienced side effects for an average of 40 months. The study also showed that most men experienced more than one sexual side effect.
These Propecia® side effects include:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Loss of libido
- Decreased semen output
- Orgasm disorders
- Mental and emotional issues
- Difficulty in cognitive processing
- Memory loss
Propecia® also comes under the brand name Proscar®. Both of these drugs are Finasterides. If you are taking any of these drugs, be sure to consult with your physician should you be experiencing any side effects.
