Filing a Protonix® Lawsuit
Protonix® (Pantoprazole) could be considered to be one of the more dangerous proton pump inhibitors on the market. Unlike other such drugs (Omeprazole and Esomeprazole — sold under the brand names Prilosec® and Nexium®), Protonix® is only available via prescription.
These drugs (including Protonix®) are often prescribed to treat acid reflux disease (sometimes called GERD) and the associated side effects including damage to the esophageal lining (the inner part of the throat).
However, Protonix® is not intended for use to treat recurring heartburn as many of the other PPI medications are. Also, there is no generic form of the drug available and it is not sold over the counter.
Protonix® Side Effects
Though the drug has been deemed safe by the FDA for treatment of patients as young as 5, some of the known side effects (and some of those that have been hinted at but not yet proven) are a bit more dangerous than those of the other PPIs.
These side effects include:
- Osteoporosis-like bone breakage
- Severe drug interactions with several common drugs (Coumadin, Ketoconazole, and even simple Iron supplements to name a few)
- Potentially lethal allergic reactions (including painful skin conditions)
- Increased risk of severe respiratory infection (especially in patients who are already ill)
- Liver failure
- Kidney damage and failure
In addition, Protonix® is only recommended for use over an eight week period, after which the user must discontinue taking the medication.
Users who take pantoprazole for longer, in higher doses (some conditions require a 40 mg dose twice per day), or multiple doses per day put themselves at higher risk for other side effects.
Protonix® Bone Fracture Lawsuit
As of May 2010, the FDA requires all PPI medications to come with enhanced warnings that showcase a possible correlation between extended PPI use and bone fracture of the wrist, hip, and spine. This increased scrutiny of the drug is a result of the FDA reviewing seven observational studies. In six of them, doctors found that patients taking these PPI drugs also suffered more bone fractures than patients not taking the drugs.
Because of this correlation, it may now be possible for patients who have experienced bone fracture of the wrist, spine, or hip to seek damages from the manufacturer of Protonix® (Teva Pharmaceuticals, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, or Prasco).
In order to do so, the patient must provide adequate proof that the ailment they are afflicted with is related to their use of Protonix®. That may not be as simply done as it is said. Many of the side effects of PPIs mimic common ailments and the drugs may share the same adverse reactions as a handful of other medications. Even the bone fractures mimic those brought on by advance osteoporosis.
That's why patients should always seek the counsel of a qualified Protonix® lawyer experienced in pharmaceutical law who can help build a solid case.
