Prozac® Has Been Known To Cause Birth Defects
Women taking Prozac® after the 24th week of their pregnancies are six times more likely to have a baby born with birth defects, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Two types of birth defects are known to occur:
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension
- Atrial and ventricular septal defects
Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) occurs at birth when the newborn's lungs fail to function properly. When the fetus is in the mother's uterus, it receives oxygenated blood from the mother. Her blood circulates within the fetus' body to supply oxygen to its tissues and organs. With the first breath of new life outside the womb, the lungs are supposed to take over the function of supplying oxygen to the blood. If they fail to do so, the result is PPHN, a life-threatening condition.
Atrial septal and ventricular septal defects are holes in the membranes that separate the chambers of the baby's heart. The heart is very inefficient at pumping blood around the body when this defect occurs. This defect is less common than PPHN in babies born to mothers who have taken Prozac®.
