What is Propylthiouracil?

PTU is a prescription medication designed to treat Graves’ disease by preventing the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone. FDA Warns Healthcare Providers

In response to the dangers of PTU, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted healthcare providers through a warning letter, June 3, 2009, advising them to take caution when prescribing this medication. The FDA’s warning was based on 32 reported cases of liver damage among PTU patients. Of these, 22 were adults and 10 were children (12 adult deaths and one pediatric death was confirmed).

More Common, Less Serious Side Effects Include:

• Unexplained hair loss
• Nausea, vomiting
• Body aches and numbness
• Hives, rash and other skin irritations
