Raptiva® is an injectable medication prescribed to treat psoriasis, an incurable condition characterized by unsightly red, scaly patches (plaques) on the skin. While psoriasis plaques can occur on any area of the body, they typically accumulate at the elbows and knees.
Raptiva® doses are generally administered once a week via an injection to the abdomen, upper arm, buttocks or thigh (depending on the rotation cycle recommended by a patient's doctor).
Although it is effective at reducing the symptoms of psoriasis, Raptiva® has been found to cause a variety of serious, life-threatening side effects, which may include:
• bacterial sepsis, a blood infection
• invasive fungal disease
• progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a viral infection that causes the brain's white matter to become inflamed in multiple locations
• viral meningitis, an infection that results in swelling of the brain and/or spinal cord.
The above conditions demand immediate medical attention to prevent fatality.
Raptiva® patients with the highest risk of developing one of the severe infections listed above include those with a history of:
• chronic fungal, viral and/or bacterial infections
• taking immunosuppressant drugs (such as those prescribed for organ transplants, HIV, certain cancers, etc.)
• undergoing phototherapy (the use of light to treat certain sleep disorders, acne, jaundice, etc.)
Due to the severity of possible Raptiva® side effects, it's vital that patients taking this psoriasis medication are aware of the symptoms of complications so they know when to seek emergency medical care.
Raptiva® side effects can be indicated by any combination of the following symptoms:
• black or bloody stools
• chills and/or fever
• congestion
• coughing
• excessive, unexplained bleeding and/or bruising (particular around the nose and gums)
• facial and/or tongue swelling (This would indicate the development of a severe allergic reaction.)
• increased redness, pain or inflammation around skin wounds
• painful or difficult urination
• sore throat
• Seek emergency medical attention to prevent further complications and save their lives
• Discontinue use of the Raptiva® drug and find an alternative treatment for their psoriasis
• Meet with a personal injury lawyer who specializes in Raptiva® lawsuits to find out if they are entitled to compensation
Patients injured after taking Raptiva®, as well as family members of deceased Raptiva® patients, will likely be entitled to compensation for their:
• funeral and burial costs
• hospital bills
• inability to earn a living
• lost wages
• ongoing treatment costs
• pain and suffering
• past medical bills
