Reglan® Deaths
(800) 664-3381
First approved by the FDA in 1985, Reglan® is a medication that can be prescribed to treat:
- diabetic gastroparesis, slow emptying of the stomach into the intestines
- gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus
- heartburn
- hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that impairs a pregnant woman from getting the nutrients she needs
- lactation problems in recent mothers
- nausea and vomiting (including when it results from chemotherapy).
Although it does have a number of effective uses, however, Reglan® is known to cause a range of mild to serious side effects. In the most severe cases, Reglan® side effects can be fatal.
When a Reglan® death occurs, families will be entitled to compensation for their losses. To find out if they have a case, it's crucial that loved ones of deceased Reglan® patients meet with an experienced wrongful death lawyer for a free initial consultation.
Severe Reglan® Side Effects
While rare, serious side effects of Reglan® medication may include:
- agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
- aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
- depression and/or suicidal thoughts
- hallucinations
- jaundice
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
- seizures
- severe allergic reaction
- tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
- tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.
If left untreated, many of these – particularly NMS and severe allergic reaction – can cause Reglan® deaths.
Should patients start experience health problems while taking Reglan®, it's vital that they seek emergency medical care to save their lives.
FDA Warnings Regarding Reglan®
Upon learning about Reglan®'s potential to cause serious, life-threatening side effects, on February 26, 2009, the FDA mandated that Reglan® drug labels contain "black box" warnings that inform the public about:
- serious Reglan® side effects
- risk factors for these complications
- the appropriate way in which to take the Reglan® drug.
As the most serious level of FDA warnings, black box warnings are the last step before the FDA recalls Reglan®. To date, no Reglan® recall has yet been issued.
