Reglan Dosage
800-889-3898
Generically known as metoclopramide , Reglan is an oral drug that is prescribed to treat:
- diabetic gastroparesis, slow emptying of the stomach into the intestines
- gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus
- heartburn
- lactation problems in recent mothers
- nausea
- vomiting.
Reglan is made by Schwarz Pharma and can be prescribed to:
- adults
- infants and children
- pregnant women
- new mothers.
Reglan medication dosage will depend on an individual's:
- condition
- the severity of his or her condition
- his or her unique medical history.
Reglan Dosage for GERD
Reglan GERD dosage typically involves:
- taking 10 mg or 15 mg Reglan tablets
- taking Reglan about 30 minutes before meals and bedtime
- taking 20 mg Reglan doses prior to a particularly provocative situation (for instance, if GERD symptoms occur at the same time each day)
- taking Reglan for between 4 and 12 weeks.
Reglan dosage for GERD should not last longer than 12 weeks, as taking this medication for extended periods of time increases patients' risk of developing serious, life-threatening side effects.
Reglan Dosage for Diabetic Gastroparesis
When prescribed in the treatment of diabetic gastroparesis, Reglan dosage involves taking:
- 10 mg Reglan tablets
- Reglan tablets 4 times per day (about 30 minutes before meals and bedtime)
- a course of Reglan medication that lasts between 2 and 8 weeks.
In particularly serious cases of diabetic gastroparesis, patients may need to start with injectable Reglan medication for the first week of their treatment. When doctors determine that severe diabetic gastroparesis is sufficiently under control, they will recommend that patients switch to the tablet form of this drug.
Reglan Dosage for Infants and Children
Reglan doses for infants and children will be significantly weaker than those for adults. While the precise Reglan dosage for younger patients will vary according to age, weight and the severity of their condition, in general, Reglan dosage guidelines for children are as follows:
- For the treatment of GERD or gastroparesis, Reglan dosage should be between 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg/dose up to 4 times per day. Total daily dosage should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/dose.
- For nausea induced by chemotherapy, Reglan dosage is typically 1 to 2 mg/kg about 30 minutes before chemotherapy and every 2 to 4 hours following treatment. No more than 5 doses of Reglan (5 to 10 mg/kg) should be taken daily.
- For children under 6 years old, Reglan doses are typically 0.1 mg/kg.
- For children between 6 and 14 years old, Reglan dosage is generally between 2.5 and 5 mg/kg.
Reglan Side Effects and Lawsuits
It's vital that Reglan patients (or parents of children taking Reglan) understand the types and symptoms of possible Reglan side effects so they know when to seek medical attention and subsequent legal help.
Severe Reglan side effects may include:
- agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
- aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
- depression and/or suicidal thoughts
- hallucinations
- jaundice
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
- seizures
- severe allergic reaction
- tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
- tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.
Anyone who develops any of these serious Reglan side effects should:
- Seek emergency medical care to prevent further health complications and save their lives.
- Follow through with all long-term prescribed treatments to achieve optimal recovery.
- Meet with an experienced Reglan attorney, once their health is stable, to find out more about their legal rights.
To encourage injured parties to seek the settlements they deserve, Reglan lawyers offer free initial consultations and work on contingency – so no payment for legal services is due until (or unless) the case is won.
