Reglan and GERD

800-889-3898

Generically known as metoclopramide, Reglan is an oral drug prescribed to treat:

  • diabetic gastroparesis, a condition in which delayed movement of food out of the stomach causes nausea, vomiting and/or heartburn
  • GERD (gastrointestinal reflux disease), in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus and causes heartburn and chest pain.

Reglan, which is produced by Schwarz Pharma, is classified in FDA pregnancy category B, meaning that it isn't expected to harm unborn babies. However, women should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnancy before starting a course of the Reglan drug.

Additionally, it is NOT safe to take Reglan when breastfeeding, as metoclopramide can pass through breast milk and harm infants.

Reglan Drug Dose

The precise dose of Reglan prescribed will depend on an individual's:

  • condition
  • the severity of his condition
  • medical history.

In most cases, healthcare professionals recommend that patients:

  • Do NOT take Reglan for periods longer than 3 months.
  • Take Reglan with a full (8-ounce) glass of water.
  • Take Reglan before meals and bedtime.
  • Only take Reglan as directed.

Missed Reglan doses should be taken as soon as a patient remembers, unless the time to take the next Reglan drug dose is approaching (at which point, patients should just take the next dose at the appointed time).

Overdoses of Reglan will require emergency medical care to prevent irreversible, potentially fatal health complications.

Reglan Drug Interactions

Reglan can have negative interactions if mixed with other medications, such as:

  • anxiety drugs
  • pain medications
  • sleeping pills.

Other drugs that may impair the effectiveness of Reglan and/or cause harmful complications include:

  • acetaminophen
  • bronchodilators
  • cyclosporine
  • digoxin
  • irritable bowel medications
  • levodopa
  • MAO inhibitors
  • urinary medications.

To minimize the risk of possible side effects of the Reglan drug, it's crucial that patients discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before starting a course of this medication.

Reglan Drug Side Effects

While common side effects of Reglan are mild and fleeting, in rare instances, severe Reglan side effects, such as the following, may arise:

  • agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
  • aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
  • depression and/or suicidal thoughts
  • hallucinations
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction
  • tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
  • tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.

Should Reglan patients develop health complications associated with these conditions, it's vital they seek emergency medical attention to prevent incurable or life-threatening complications.

Reglan Drug Lawsuits

  • Learn more about their legal rights.
  • Find out if they have a legal claim against Schwarz Pharma.
