Reglan® for Infants

800-664-3381

First approved by the FDA in 1985, Reglan® is an oral medication prescribed to treat GERD, diabetic gastroparesis and lactation problems. Although Reglan® is primarily indicated for adults, in some cases, this medication may be prescribed to infants experiencing acid reflux and/or recurring vomiting.

Reglan® is generically known as metoclopramide and is produced by Schwarz Pharma.

Reglan® for Infants: Side Effects

Despite its various effective applications, Reglan® is known to cause a range of mild to severe side effects. Mild side effects may include:

  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • increased frequency or urination
  • insomnia (or other sleeping problems)
  • nausea
  • restlessness.

Most of these minor Reglan® side effects will clear up on their own, once a course of Reglan® has been completed.

Tragically, in rare circumstances, infants can develop serious complications after taking Reglan®. Severe Reglan® side effects may include:

  • hallucinations
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction
  • tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
  • tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.

These Reglan® side effects are most likely to occur if:

  • Reglan® is taken for longer than 12 weeks.
  • High doses of Reglan® are taken (intentionally or accidentally).

Other Brand Names of Reglan®

Reglan® is just one of the brand names of the generic drug known as metoclopramide. Other brand names of this medication are:

  • Degan, by Lek
  • Maxeran, by Sanofi Aventis
  • Maxolon, by Shire/Valeant
  • Primperan, by Sanofi Aventis

Following Reglan® Side Effects

It's vital that parents of infants on Reglan®:

  • Seek emergency medical care for their child to prevent further health problems.
  • Follow through with all prescribed treatments to help their infant recover as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
  • Work with doctors to find a suitable alternative to Reglan®.
  • Meet with an experienced Reglan® attorney, once their infant's health is stable, to learn more about their legal rights.

During a free initial consultation, parents of injured Reglan® infants (or families of deceased Reglan® patients) can get an expert evaluation of their claim and find out if they are entitled to a settlement for their:

  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • permanent disabilities
  • future costs of living (should permanent disabilities prevent patients from earning a living)
