Reglan® Injections

Generically known as metoclopramide, Reglan® is a gastrointestinal medication that may come in the form of tablets, syrup and/or injections. While the most appropriate form of Reglan® medication will depend on an individual and his condition, in most , Reglan® injection treatment is prescribed for:
- diabetic gastroparesis, slow emptying of the stomach into the intestines
- gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD, also known as gastric reflux), the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus
- heartburn
- hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that impairs a pregnant woman from getting the nutrients she needs
- lactation problems in recent mothers
- nausea and vomiting (including when it results from chemotherapy).
The Reglan® injection drug is made by Schwarz Pharma, and other brand names of this medication include:
- Degan by Lek
- Maxeran by Sanofi Aventis
- Maxolon by Shire/Valeant
- Primperan by Sanofi Aventis
- Pylomid by Bosnalijek.
Reglan® Injection Dosage
Reglan® injection dosing will vary from patient to patient. Factors that affect a Reglan® injection dosage include:
- a patient's condition
- the severity of his or her condition
- his or her unique medical history
- whether female patients are thinking about getting pregnant, are pregnant or are nursing.
As with Reglan® tablets, Reglan® injections come in 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg and 20 mg doses. However, because injections have a more immediate affect, Reglan® IV doses will start working within 1 to 3 minutes. Their effects will last up to 3 hours.
Reglan® injections may be administered intravenously (into a vein) or intramuscularly (into a muscle).
Reglan® Side Effects
Reglan® injections can cause adverse reactions in rare circumstances. While most Reglan® injection side effects are mild and respond well to treatment, in the worst cases, serious Reglan® side effects may include:
- agranulocytosis, low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
- aldosteronism, an excess of adrenal gland hormones that can result in low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
- depression and/or suicidal thoughts
- hallucinations
- jaundice
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
- seizures
- severe allergic reaction
- tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
- tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.
Those with the highest risk of develop such severe Reglan® side effects include patients:
- with a history of severe allergic reaction, seizures, intestinal bleeding and/or adrenal gland tumors
- who have taken or are currently taking certain medications, such as cabergoline or pergolide
- who take high doses of Reglan® (particularly if doses are higher than prescribed)
- who take Reglan® for longer than 12 weeks at a time.
