Reglan® Medication

(800) 664-3381

Produced by Schwarz Pharma, Reglan® is an oral medication used in the treatment of certain gastrointestinal disorders, including:

  • diabetic gastroparesis (delayed movement of food from the stomach to the intestines)
  • gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD, the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus)
  • heartburn
  • nausea and/or vomiting.

Additionally, Reglan® may be prescribed as:

  • acid reflux medication for infants
  • heartburn medication during pregnancy.

Despite the effectiveness of various Reglan® medication uses, however, this medication is known to cause some mild to severe side effects, which, in the worst cases, can be life threatening.

It's vital that patients thinking of starting a course of Reglan® are aware of the types and symptoms of possible Reglan® side effects so they know when to seek medical and legal help.

Reglan® Medication Dosage

Individual Reglan® medication doses will vary according to a patient's:

  • condition
  • the severity of his or her condition
  • his or her unique medical history.

In general, however, Reglan® doses:

  • come in the form of tablets or liquid medication
  • are 10 mg or 15 mg in strength
  • should be taken three to four times daily before meals and bedtime
  • should NOT be taken for longer than 12-weeks to minimize the chances of serious Reglan® side effects.

Occasionally, terminating use of Reglan® after a 12-week course can cause withdrawal symptoms, including headache, dizziness and nervousness. To minimize these side effects, it's important that Reglan® patients work with their doctor to safely taper off Reglan® medication dosage in the final weeks of taking this drug.

Reglan® Medication Side Effects

In most cases, Reglan® side effects are minor, easily treated and will dissipate once the course of this medication is complete. Mild side effects of Reglan® medication may include:

  • changes in menstrual cycles
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • increased frequency or urination
  • insomnia (or other sleeping problems)
  • nausea
  • restlessness.

Infrequently, side effects of Reglan® medication are severe and potentially fatal. Serious Reglan® medication side effects may include:

  • agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
  • aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
