Metoclopramide Drug Information

(800) 664-3381

First described in 1967 by Dr. Louis Justin-Besancon, metoclopramide is medication that speeds up the muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract in order to stimulate the digestive process. Metoclopramide is prescribed to treat the following conditions in diabetes patients:

  • gastroesophageal reflex (GERD), the backup of stomach acids into the esophagus
  • gastroparesis, delayed and incomplete emptying of the stomach
  • heartburn
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Metoclopramide may also be prescribed to treat nausea and vomiting caused by other medications.

What is Metoclopramide HCl (Hydrochloride)?

Metoclopramide HCl is a specific formulation of the metoclopramide drug that is sold under the brandname Reglan® and is produced by Schwarz Pharma. Other formulations of metoclopramide are distributed under the following brand names:

  • Degan, by Lek
  • Maxeran, by Sanofi Aventis
  • Maxolon, by Shire/Valeant
  • Primperan, by Sanofi Aventis
  • Pylomid, by Bosnalijek

Metoclopramide Side Effects

In most cases, metoclopramide patients will experience minimal, if any, side effects, such as headaches, diarrhea and/or restlessness. Unfortunately, however, metoclopramide has been reported to have some severe, potentially fatal side effects, including:

  • agranulocytosis, severely low levels of a particular white blood cell
  • arrhythmia
  • epilepsy
  • hyperaldosteronism, high levels of aldosterone (a hormone) that has the potential to dangerously decrease the levels of potassium in the blood
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a type of muscle rigidity that is commonly accompanied by fever and delirium
  • tardive dyskinesia, a type of involuntary movement characterized by grimacing, lip smacking and rapid movements of the extremities

Metoclopramide patients who start experiencing symptoms of any of the above conditions should seek emergency medical attention to prevent further, life-threatening injuries.

Metoclopramide/Reglan® Lawsuit

Given the severity of some of metoclopramide's side effects, injured patients will be entitled to compensation by pursuing a defective drug lawsuit.

Prospective plaintiffs can learn more about their legal rights by scheduling a complimentary consult with an experienced Reglan® attorney. During this meeting, injured parties can:

  • Find out whether they have a viable legal claim
  • Learn more about the upcoming legal process
  • Get expert advice regarding the most appropriate manner in which to resolve their case
  • Secure the services of a professional, well trained personal injury attorney who will fight on their behalf

Metoclopramide Class Action Lawsuit

In some cases, injured parties may want to join an already-progressing class action lawsuit, rather than file an individual claim. Metoclopramide class action lawsuits are typically better suited for plaintiffs who:

  • Want some distance from the legal process
  • Want to ensure that they receive a fair amount for their injuries (class action settlements are specifically distributed so that plaintiffs with similar injuries get similar awards)
  • Have experienced less severe injuries similar to other patients
