Reglan® for Milk Production
(800) 664-3381
Primarily prescribed in the treatment of GERD and diabetic gastroparesis, Reglan® is an oral medication that may also be used to treat hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness.
While hyperemesis gravidarum can cause dramatic weight loss and depression during pregnancy, once a baby is born, this condition may make it difficult (or impossible) for a recent mother to produce breast milk.
Reglan®, generically known as metoclopramide, can be effective at helping induce lactation so mothers can breastfeed.
Currently, the FDA has classified Reglan® as "pregnancy category B," meaning that Reglan®:
- isn't expected to harm unborn babies (should pregnant women need to take this medication)
- can transfer through breastmilk and affect newborns.
Reglan® Breastfeeding Dose
Reglan® breastfeeding dosage will vary according to the severity of a woman's condition, as well as her unique medical history.
In general, however, Reglan® breastfeeding dosing will require women to take one 10mg Reglan® tablet three to four times everyday for a week. Over the next week, Reglan® breastfeeding doses will taper off to prevent mothers from developing symptoms of Reglan® withdrawals.
Depending on a woman's condition, Reglan® may be prescribed in conjunction with anti-emetic drugs, medications that relieve nausea and vomiting.
Reglan® for Infants
Occasionally, Reglan® may be prescribed to infants or young children who suffer from gastrointestinal conditions, such as:
- heartburn
- nausea
- vomiting.
To date, there have not been any reports of infants developing serious Reglan® side effects. However, parents are advised to be alert for extreme drowsiness and poor feeding in infants taking Reglan®.
Reglan® Side Effects
Rare but serious Reglan® side effects can include:
- agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
- aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
- depression and/or suicidal thoughts
- hallucinations
- jaundice
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
- seizures
- severe allergic reaction
- tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
- tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.
These side effects:
- typically arise in mothers (rather than in infants)
- can be irreversible or life-threatening, if left untreated
- require emergency medical care to prevent further health complications.
