Reglan and Pregnancy

800-889-3898

Produced by Schwarz Pharma, Reglan is an oral medication that may be prescribed in the treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum, an extreme form of morning sickness that severely impairs a pregnant woman's nutrition and health.

When pregnant women develop hyperemesis gravidarum, Reglan can help reduce their nausea and vomiting, which, in turn, helps them keep food down and absorb the nutrients they need.

Additionally, Reglan may also be used to treat poor production of breastmilk. By stimulating the brain's production of the hormone prolactin, Reglan can improve lactation and allow mothers to breastfeed.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies Reglan in "pregnancy category B," meaning that Reglan:

  • is not known to harm unborn babies
  • can pass through breastmilk in small amounts (Extreme sleepiness and poor feeding are indications that too much Reglan is passing through breastmilk. No serious Reglan side effects affecting infants via breastmild have yet been reported).

Reglan is generically known as metoclopramide.

Reglan Pregnancy Dose

Dosage for Reglan pregnancy medicinces will vary according to the severity of a woman's condition, as well as her personal medical history. In general, however, pregnant or nursing women will need to take a 10mg Reglan pill three to four times per day for a week. In the following week, Reglan dosage will slowly decrease until a woman is totally weaned off Reglan by the end of the second week.

While individual instructions for taking Reglan will vary (Always follow your doctor's instructions.), it is not recommended that patients take this medication for longer than 12 weeks, as extended use of Reglan can cause life-threatening side effects.

Reglan Side Effects

The Reglan pregnancy drug is known to cause a range of mild to severe side effects. While milder Reglan side effects will typically clear up on their own, in rare cases, serious complications associated with use of Reglan may include:

  • agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
  • aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
  • depression and/or suicidal thoughts
  • hallucinations
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction
  • tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
  • tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.
