Reglan Drug

Produced by Schwarz Pharma, Reglan is an oral tablet prescribed in the treatment of:

• the heartburn associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as GERD), a condition resulting from the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus
  
• diabetic gastric stasis (also known as diabetic gastropareis), a condition marked by nausea, vomiting, heartburn and loss of appetite due to a delay in the emptying of the stomach's contents.

Reglan is generically known as metoclopramide and may also be sold under the following brand names:

• Degan, made by Lek
• Maxeran, made by Sanofi Aventis
• Maxolon, made by Shire/Valeant
• Primperan, made by Sanofi Aventis
• Pylomid, made by Bosnalijek.

Reglan Dose

To minimize the possibility of side effects, it's crucial that Reglan is:

• only taken as directed
• not taken for longer than 12 weeks
• is taken with a full glass of water
• is taken before meals and at bedtime.

Should Reglan patients miss a dose of this medication, they should take the missed dose as soon as they remember (Unless it's near the time for the next dose, at which point, they should skip the missed dose and take the next Reglan dose at the appropriate time).

Alternately, Reglan overdoses are serious events that will call for emergency medical care to prevent patients from developing further health problems.

Reglan Side Effects

In most cases, Reglan patients will only develop minor, if any, side effects after taking this drug. Common, mild Reglan side effects may include:

• breast swelling
• changes in menstrual cycles
• diarrhea
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• fatigue
• headache
• increased frequency or urination
• insomnia (or other sleeping problems)
• nausea
• restlessness.

Unfortunately, however, some other rare but serious Reglan side effects have also been reported. These Reglan medication side effects can include:

• agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
• aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and lead to low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
• depression and/or suicidal thoughts
• hallucinations
• jaundice
• neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
• seizures
• severe allergic reaction
• tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
• tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.

While some the serious Reglan side effects are incurable, in the worst cases, they can be fatal without prompt medical attention.
