Reglan

Reglan (metoclopramide) is a widely prescribed prescription drug used to treat a number of gastrointestinal conditions including diabetic gastric stasis and gastric reflux, or heartburn. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for short-term use, since taking the medication for extended periods of time carries serious risks. Among the risks associated with long-term Reglan use are depression, tardive dyskinesia, heart problems, and Parkinson's-like symptoms. Unfortunately, as many as one-third of all Reglan users have been directed to take the medication for a year or longer.

If you or a loved one has suffered serious injury or death while taking Reglan, you may be eligible to recover compensation for your losses. Please contact us to learn more about your legal rights and options FREE of charge.

Reglan Side Effects

Some of the more serious Reglan side effects are:

  • Tardive dyskinesia - involuntary muscle movements, usually in the face and tongue, but sometimes in the trunk or extremities
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms - slow movements, rigidity, and tremors
  • Akathesia - a severe anxiety and inability to sit still
  • Suicidal Tendencies
  • Seizures
  • More

Some of these side effects progressively worsen and may eventually become irreversible. The label on Reglan does advise of these adverse effects but states that the incidence is rare. However, such a statement appears to be a misrepresentation of the facts. For instance, studies have shown that the use of Reglan can cause tardive dyskinesia in as many as 27% of its long-term users .

Those who have suffer from Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders, tumors, or clinical depression should exercise extreme caution when taking Reglan, as it may worsen symptoms. Individuals who are directed to take Reglan for extended periods of time should consult with their physician to discuss possible alternatives.
