Reglan Side Effects

800-889-3898

First approved by the FDA in 1985, Reglan is an oral medication that, when taken as directed, can effectively treat:

  • diabetic gastroparesis, delayed movement of food from the stomach into the intestines (Symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.)
  • GERD, a backup of stomach acid into the esophagus (marked by heartburn and chest pain).

Reglan is generically known as metoclopramide and is produced by Schwarz Pharma.

Unfortunatley, Reglan is known to cause a vast range of serious side effects. Although rare, some severe Reglan side effects can be fatal if not promptly treated.

Anyone injured after taking Reglan, as well as families of deceased Reglan patients, should meet with an experienced Reglan lawyer to find out if they are entitled to a settlement for their injuries and losses.

Severe Side Effects of Reglan

Serious health problems that may develop after taking Reglan include:

  • agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
  • aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
  • depression and/or suicidal thoughts
  • hallucinations
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction
  • tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
  • tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.

While some of these conditions can clear up with immediate treatment, in the worst cases, serious Reglan side effects are incurable and/or potentially fatal.

Symptoms of Reglan Side Effects

It's essential that Reglan patients (or individuals thinking of beginning a course of Reglan) understand the types and symptoms of serious Reglan side effects so they know when to seek emergency medical attention.

Reglan side effect symptoms can include (but aren't limited to):

  • anxiety and/or agitation
  • convulsions
  • delirium
  • fever
  • increased heartbeats
  • jitters
  • loss of consciousness
  • restlessness
  • tremors
  • uncontrollable movements in the eyes, tongue, jaw and/or neck.

FDA Issues Black Box Warning for Reglan

After receiving an increasing number of reports regarding serious Reglan side effects, on February 26, 2009, the FDA mandated that Schwarz Pharma include "black box" warning labels of the Reglan drug.

Black box FDA warnings are the most serious type of FDA warning, as they indicate that a medication has the potential to cause life-threatening side effects.

As part of the new printed warning, Schwarz Pharma must also include information regarding the complications associated with:

  • high Reglan dosage
  • using Reglan for longer than 12-weeks at a time.

Following Reglan Side Effects: Treatment and Lawsuits

Should patients develop the symptoms of serious Reglan side effects, it's vital that they:

  • Seek emergency medical attention to prevent further health complications.
  • Work with their doctor to find an alternative to the Reglan drug.
  • Meet with a Reglan lawyer, once their health is stable, to find out if they have a viable legal claim against Schwarz Pharma.

Those who have a legal claim and decide to stand up for their legal rights, via a Reglan lawsuit, can win compensation for their:

  • past hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
  • permanent disabilities
  • future costs of living (should permanent disabilities prevent patients from earning a living)
  • pain and suffering.
