Available in tablet and syrup form, Reglan is a medication used in the treatment of:

  • diabetic gastroparesis, slow emptying of the stomach into the intestines
  • gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), the backup of stomach acid into the esophagus
  • heartburn
  • hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that impairs a pregnant woman from getting the nutrients she needs
  • lactation problems in recent mothers
  • nausea
  • vomiting.

While Reglan is primarily indicated for adults, it may also be prescribed for infants, children and pregnant or nursing mothers.

Produced by Schwarz Pharma, Reglan is generically known as metoclopramide and may also be sold under the following brand names:

  • Degan by Lek
  • Maxeran by Sanofi Aventis
  • Maxolon by Shire/Valeant
  • Primperan by Sanofi Aventis
  • Pylomid by Bosnalijek.

Reglan Syrup Dosing

The appropriate dosage for Reglan syrup will depend on a patient's:

  • age
  • condition
  • unique medical history.

Additionally, the severity of the individual's conditions and whether or not a patient is pregnant or nursing will also affect the proper Reglan syrup dosing for a given patient.

General Reglan dosage guidelines are as follows:

  • Take Reglan syrup orally about 30 minutes before meals.
  • Use an appropriate measuring device for doling out Reglan syrup medication (Reglan doctors and pharmacists can instruct patients on how to properly measure out Reglan syrup).
  • Take missed Reglan syrup doses as soon as you remember (unless it's almost time for the next dose of Reglan, at which point patients should just skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the appropriate time).
  • Do NOT stop a course of prescribed Reglan without first consulting a doctor.

Reglan Syrup Side Effects

While, in most cases, Reglan side effects are minor and treatable, on rare occasion, Reglan syrup can cause some serious complications, including:

  • agranulocytosis, a condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells (If left untreated, agranulocytosis can result in osteoporosis and other irreversible conditions.)
  • aldosteronism, a condition in which the adrenal glands produce excessive hormones and cause low blood-potassium levels (If left untreated, aldosteronism can be fatal, as it may result in heart attack, heart failure, stroke or kidney failure.)
  • depression and/or suicidal thoughts
  • hallucinations
  • jaundice
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a life-threatening neurological condition marked by delirium, fever and muscle rigidity
  • seizures
  • severe allergic reaction
  • tachycardia, an arrhythmia marked by increased heart rate
  • tardive dyskinesia, involuntary, repetitive writhing movements affecting the face, trunk and/or limbs.

Risk factors for these side effects include:

  • a history of severe allergic reaction, seizures, intestinal bleeding and/or adrenal gland tumors
  • a history of taking certain medications, such as cabergoline or pergolide
  • high reglan dosage (particularly if doses are higher than prescribed)
  • taking Reglan for longer than 12 weeks at a time.
