Remicade Infections

Researchers have discovered a number of serious and life-threatening side effects associated with Remicade, a popular injectable drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. Among the most serious side effects, are Remicade infections and cancer.

According to a 2006 study conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic, Remicade and its chemical cousin Humira can TRIPLE the risk of cancer and DOUBLE the risk of life-threatening infection. Among the most serious Remicade infections are tuberculosis and pneumonia .

Precautions to avoid Remicade infections

Patients who do not fell well or have symptoms that may indicate infection are advised to avoid Remicade. Patients may also be given a tuberculin skin test to ensure that they do not have an inactive tuberculosis infection, since this can increase the risk of Remicade infections.

Risk factors for Remicade infections

  • Older age appears to increase the risk of developing Remicade infections
  • Concurrent use of immunosuppressive therapy such as drugs that prevent organ rejection following transplant surgery
  • Concurrent use of Kineret (anakinra), which is a drug used to alleviate the symptoms of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis
  • History of Hepatitis B; Remicade can cause Hepatitis B to become active again
  • High doses of Remicade appear to increase the risk of Remicade infections
  • Long-term use of Remicade; patients who have been using Remicade for an extended duration appear to be at greater risk for Remicade infections.
