Remicade and skin problems study
Researchers have found that TNF-blocking drugs such as Remicade, Hurmira, and Enbrel heighten the risk of serious and clinically important skin problems for rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Out of the 289 rheumatoid arthritis participants in the Dutch study, 25 percent received medical attention for Remicade and skin problems within the first two years of drug treatment. Only 13 percent of participants who were given the placebo pill consulted a doctor about their skin problems. The study concluded that Remicade and similar drugs doubles the risk of skin problems in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Common Remicade skin problems
If you experience symptoms of Remicade skin problems, it is important to consult a dermatologist.
Remicade and skin cancer
A May 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association was the first to find that rheumatoid arthritis patients who take Remicade are three times more likely to develop skin cancer than those who don't.
Researchers believe that patients with a history of cancer and those who are older or sick are more susceptible to Remicade skin cancer and other adverse effects of the drug. Furthermore, patients who have taken Remicade for an extended period of time or those who take higher doses are at the greatest risk for suffering serious Remicade side effects.
Before starting or continuing Remicade, it is important to weigh the risks and benefits of the drug with a doctor to determine if it's the right treatment for you.
