Risperdal Medication

Risperdal medication was approved to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, though doctors have been prescribing Risperdal to control behavioral disorders in elderly patients afflicted with dementia and Alzheimers disease, including delusions, aggression, and anxiety. The recent April 2003 Johnson & Johnson announcement advising of possible increased risk of stroke among elderly patients using Risperdal was in response to the 37 reports of stroke or stroke-like events amongst Risperdal patients, including 16 deaths. Several clinical trials testing Risperdal in Alzheimers patients have increased concern for experiencing severe Risperdal side effects.

Risperdal works by interfering with the communication among nerves in the brain. By releasing chemicals known as neurotransmitters the nerves are able to communicate with one another. Neurotransmitters attach to receptors of neighboring nerves, causing changes in the cells that have receptors. The use of Risperdal allows several receptors on nerves to be blocked so that communication among nerves does not occur.

Extreme caution should be taken when prescribing Risperdal due to the many unpleasant, as well as reported serious side effects that can occur with its use. There are certain Risperdal individuals that will have traits and factors that increase the likelihood of suffering Risperdal side effects. Risperdal clinical trials have shown that 4% of Risperdal patients suffered stroke or stroke-related events, opposed to just 2% of people receiving placebos. There were four Risperdal deaths and just on death amongst placebo recipients. Many people are wondering why earlier Risperdal warnings were not issued until the recent worrisome Risperdal clinical trials despite the six-month previous Canadian announcement.
