Ritalin Heart Attacks

Ritalin, the most frequently prescribed treatment of Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder (ADHD), may increase the risks of Ritalin heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, death and other cardiovascular problems .

According to a recent Food and Drug Administration report, 51 U.S. deaths in 2004 may be connected to the use of ADHD medications including Ritalin. While there is not enough data to prove the drugs were responsible for the fatalities, the FDA urged regulators to monitor for Ritalin heart attacks, high blood pressure, and other problems.

Ritalin is used to treat ADHD, one of the most commonly diagnosed neurological disorders in America. Ritalin has also been approved for the treatment of narcolepsy. Ritalin works as a central nervous system stimulant to improve the symptoms of ADHD, which include poor concentration, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.

Ritalin has been the source of much controversy in the past due to parents' and doctors' concerns of side effects, abuse, and over-prescription. With the new reports of deaths and serious injuries in patients taking ADHD medication, the drugs may be posing serious risks including Ritalin heart attacks to millions of children and adults.

Some serious Ritalin side effects include:

  • Ritalin heart attacks
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Anorexia
  • Heart palpitations
  • Psychosis and/or paranoia
  • Anemia
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Death

The FDA will continue to evaluate the risks of Ritalin heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and death that may be associated with these drugs. They will also be evaluating evidence of psychiatric problems caused or aggravated by Ritalin side effects.

Ritalin users are also prone to many common side effects including:

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Anxiety
  • Stomachaches and headaches
  • Dry mouth
