Dangers of Seroquel

Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) is part of a new breed of medicine known as "atypical" antipsychotics, designed to minimize many side effects of antipsychotic medication, such as loss of motor control. Patients and doctors, largely unaware of the other dangers of Seroquel, praised the drug for not causing problems such as involuntary loss of motor control, a major issue with the "typical" antipsychotics. As the dangers of Seroquel began to surface, patients became more concerned-now having to decide between remaining on Seroquel with no tremors, but a high risk of diabetes. A number of lawsuits against drug manufacturer AstraZeneca have been filed recently, claiming inadequate warning about potential dangers of Seroquel, an antipsychotic used in the treatment of schizophrenia.

A recent study found that one of the dangers of Seroquel is an increased rate in the onset of diabetes, leading the FDA to request that manufacturer AstraZeneca clearly list the dangers of Seroquel on product packaging. The warning, designed to inform physicians and consumers alike about the potential dangers of Seroquel, appeared on packaging in Japan, but has yet to be included in American packaging. In February of 2004, four medical societies issued a statement in the journal Diabetes Care regarding the dangers of Seroquel and other antipsychotics. In the statement, physicians and patients were informed about the dangers of Seroquel, Abilify, Clozaril, Geodon, Risperdol, and Zyprexa. Physicians were told to screen patient histories, discuss the potential dangers of Seroquel with patients, and monitor them for any sign of diabetes and other problems.

Informing potential consumers about the dangers of Seroquel is the duty of the manufacturer, AstraZeneca. By failing to provide sufficient warning as requested by the FDA, the company gives the impression that they are more concerned with profit than protecting patients from the possible dangers of Seroquel. If you or a loved one is taking Seroquel, do not alter or stop your dosage without first contacting a physician. Discuss the reported dangers of Seroquel with your doctor, and determine if the risk factors in your case are inappropriate for you to continue with this medication. And if you feel that you have already suffered as a result of taking the medication, an attorney familiar with the dangers of Seroquel should be able to help you make the right legal decisions to get your life back to normal as soon as possible.
