Trasylol® Heart Attack

(800) 889-3898

The medication Trasylol® (aprotinin), commonly administered to heart surgery patients has now been proven to cause adverse and life-threatening side effects such as a Trasylol® heart attack . Trasylol® is a medication that is given to control bleeding in cardiovascular surgical patients. Trasylol® has been widely used throughout the United States since it's release by Bayer AG in 1993. Recent findings in a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine underline the serious risks associate with Trasylol®.

The Study

The study led by Dr. Dennis T. Mangano and associates at the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation, determined that the risk of experiencing a Trasylol® heart attack may be increased as much as 50 percent in comparison to other medications. The study to establish the risk for Trasylol® heart attack and other adverse side effects examined over 4000 heart surgery patients who were given either Trasylol®, alternative medications or no medication at all. The research produced shocking results regarding a drug that has been widely used and available for thirteen years.

Trasylol® Side Effects

Patients who were given Trasylol® during their operation not only displayed a 50 percent greater risk of Trasylol® heart attack, but also exhibited a nearly doubled risk for renal failure, and a substantially higher risk for strokes and heart failure. Patients taking generic alternatives and no medication for blood loss did not demonstrate any heightened disposition for risk factors.

A Trasylol® heart attack is an injury caused by lack of blood supply to the heart muscle. Heart attacks, which have been proven to be a considerable risk with Trasylol®, can destroy parts of the heart muscle causing potentially fatal harm to the patient.

The Alternative

There are several alternatives that can be used in replacement of Trasylol® to prevent the occurrence of a Trasylol® heart attack. Aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid are generic medications that have shown to be comparably effective medications to prevent blood loss in heart surgery patients . These alternatives have been favored by many doctors prior to the study for economical and safety purposes. Evidence gathered in Dr. Mangano's research strongly supports the use of alternative medications to avert the risk of a Trasylol® heart attack.
