Viagra Blurred Vision

The link between Viagra and blurred vision has grown increasingly stronger recently. Researchers at the University of Minnesota say that they have diagnosed a condition called non-arthritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in a group of men who took the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. NAION is also known as a stroke of the eye. The condition occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is interrupted, injuring the nerve and causing permanent vision loss.

The researchers studied seven patients regarding Viagra and blurred vision, all men between the ages of 50 and 69. All of the patients took Viagra and blurred vision and vision loss developed within 36 hours of taking Viagra. It has been known for several years that Viagra use can cause temporary color change in patients' vision, but this new condition appears to be permanent.

A common side effect that may occur is a temporary change in color vision, such as trouble telling the difference between blue and green objects or having a blue color tinge to them. Viagra side effects also cause the eyes to be more sensitive to light and blurred vision. Viagra side effects were thought to be relatively inconsequential until the reports of NAION.

The Food and Drug Administration has asked Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drug maker, to amend its warnings on Viagra in response to scattered reports of vision loss by people taking the drug. The instance of patients experiencing blindness from Viagra and blurred vision as well has caused the FDA to react to yet another blockbuster drug causing significant health issues. Recent recalls of Bextra and Vioxx have left many consumers weary about the safety of prescription drugs and the clinical studies they go through.

While possible Viagra side effects include cardiac and digestive problems, vision problems have been the biggest problems. There are a growing number of cases where men are allegedly experiencing blurred vision and loss of vision due to a condition called NAION while taking Viagra. There are also reports of intraocular pressure, retinal vascular disease and other eye complications. The drug's label currently has warnings about possible side effects involving eyesight, such as increased sensitivity to light or blurred vision.

While Viagra and blurred vision cause worry for some users, Pfizer Inc. stands by their product and says the incidences of blindness are strictly individual-related. Pfizer say that those affected by Viagra with blurred vision or blindness have conditions that predispose them to vision problems. However, the fact that Viagra is an inhibitor to these problems should be a large enough concern.
