Viagra Side Effects

With recent reports of blindness among some men using the impotence drug Viagra, the FDA is looking a little more closely at Viagra side effects. Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a type of vision loss that has been diagnosed in Viagra-taking patients. NAION is a vision disorder resulting in vision loss, and is sometimes described as "stroke of the eye." NAION can occur in men who are diabetic or have heart disease, which are the same conditions that can cause impotence and thus lead to Viagra use.

The FDA has 38 reports of NAION among users of Viagra, as well as 4 others among users of Cialis, another ED drug. Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, has advised the public of Viagra's side effects in the past. Viagra, approved to treat erectile dysfunction, should not be used by men with heart conditions whose doctors have warned them not to have sex. Also, patients taking drugs that contain nitrates have been warned not to take Viagra because of sudden, unsafe drops in blood pressure.

The drug's label also warns of Viagra side effects such as erections lasting longer than four hours, painful erections lasting longer than six hours, headache, flushed skin and vision problems. The FDA is in discussions about the reported cases of Viagra side effects with the manufacturer of the the drug in case there is a problem with the class of medication and to see if changes need to be made to their labels.

Viagra side effects related to vision have been purported mostly as only minor effects. Viagra manufacturer Pfizer also refers on its website to some vision issues: "Less common are bluish or blurred vision, or being sensitive to light. These may occur for a short time."

Pfizer may have to add a disclosure to Viagra's label regarding Viagra side effects to say that in rare cases, men taking Viagra had developed blindness. Pfizer believes there is no proof that Viagra side effects are responsible for the blindness, claiming that men who take Viagra often have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are also associated with the conditions that can cause blindness.

Viagra was approved by the government in 1998 and has also been used in the treatment of enlarged hearts that can result from high blood pressure. Other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Levitra and Cialis, all work in the same fashion, but that doesn't mean they all have the same Viagra side effects. Critics say that every drug is different and Viagra side effects are specific to Viagra, and the side effects of erectile dysfunction drugs. Industry critics have been demanding that drug companies conduct more post-marketing studies in order to do a better job of discovering problems, like Viagra side effects, before drugs hit the market.

Viagra side effects can be severe in some cases. If you experience any Viagra side effects, especially with vision, contact your doctor immediately. Viagra side effects related to vision stand the best chance of being corrected within the first 24 hours of symptoms.
