Recent reports have shown that sudden vision loss in Viagra users is in fact a side effect of the popular erectile dysfunction drug. At least a dozen men taking the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra have developed a serious eye problem resulting in sudden vision loss that can cause blindness, according to a scientist whose research was published in the current Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology.
Researchers from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis recently found that some patients developed a condition called non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which can lead to permanent loss of vision if not treated within the first days of symptoms.
The sudden vision loss experienced from Viagra is from a reduction in blood flow. The sudden vision loss develops when blood flow is reduced to the nerve bundle that sends images to the brain, called the optic nerve. It is similar to a blood clot that can cut off the blood supply to parts of the brain, causing a stroke by starving the nerve cells of oxygen. This sudden vision loss condition has been described as "stroke of the eye."
In all of the most recent cases, patients developed NAION within a day and a half of ingesting the little blue pill Viagra. However, all seven had high blood pressure and three of the patients had preexisting eye problems that could have increased their risk of developing the problem.
Previous studies have shown that some men who take Viagra will experience temporary color changes in their vision and see things as blue or green, but the studies have never shown sudden vision loss. NAION is a much more serious condition because it can lead to permanent vision loss.
This study is significant because the sudden vision loss and quick onset of NAION after Viagra ingestion supports a close link between the drug and the condition. Researchers recommend that eye doctors ask their patients with NAION about Viagra use and caution them about possible increased risk of the problem in the other eye.
Federal health investigators are looking into reports that some men who used Viagra may have suffered a new and very serious side effect of sudden vision loss. Twenty-three million men worldwide have used Viagra. A small number of them are having sudden vision loss after taking normal doses. The FDA is urgently meeting about sudden vision loss because of Viagra with medical experts and the company that produces Viagra, Pfizer.
If you experience sudden vision loss from Viagra, contact a doctor immediately. NAION must be treated within the first days of the onset of symptoms relating to sudden vision loss. People suffering from sudden vision loss from Viagra may be entitled to compensation. If you have suffered from sudden vision loss due to Viagra, contact an attorney today.
