Vioxx Claim

A Vioxx claim is a lawsuit filed by individuals who have been injured as a result of taking this prescription medication. Vioxx is a COX-2 selective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory prescription medication that was originally approved by the FDA in 1999 to treat the severe pain associated with arthritis and severe menstrual cramps. Since this drug's approval there has always existed concern over the safety of this pain prescription medication. In September 2004 these concerns culminated in the voluntary withdrawal of this medication from the market in light of serious health risks associated with Vioxx use.

Vioxx's maker, Merck, voluntarily recalled Vioxx after internal studies revealed that Vioxx use increased a patient's risk of suffering a serious thromobembolic (heart attack or stroke) event. A study called APPROVe was initiated in 2000 to study the effects of Vioxx on the colon. After eighteen months, the study was stopped short when researchers found that the study group taking Vioxx was twice as likely to suffer stroke or heart problems as the control group. After this evidence was discovered, Merck determined that the risks associated with Vioxx outweighed the intended benefits of this medication and pulled it from the shelves.

Merck was aware of the potential risks associated with their high-selling pain prescription medication for years before they took action to protect patients from the serious side effects associated with their product. In March of 2000 Merck issued a statement acknowledging that a medication similar to Vioxx (naproxen) carried a significantly lower risk of causing heart attack or stroke than Vioxx. These concerns should have prompted an immediate study to further test the cardiovascular safety of Vioxx use, but the drug company chose not to take this important step to protect patients from potential health threats.
