Vioxx and Interaction

Information about Vioxx and interaction risks is intended to caution certain patient populations that Vioxx may not be appropriate for use. Vioxx and interaction information was included on all consumer product information prior to the recall of this once-popular pain medication. Vioxx was pulled off the market on September 30, 2004 after clinical studies indicated that patients taking Vioxx for at least eighteen months were two times more likely to suffer heart attack or stroke, compared to the general population.

Prior to the recall, Vioxx's maker (Merck) provided information about Vioxx and interaction risks. There are certain drugs which, when taken in conjunction with Vioxx, increased a patient's risk of suffering deleterious side effects. Vioxx and interaction with ACE inhibitors increased a patient's risk of suffering high blood pressure or renal injury.

Vioxx and interaction risks may be present with the concurrent use of aspirin. In patients who are aspirin sensitive, Vioxx can increase the risks of a negative reaction. Vioxx and interaction with aspirin is also known to greatly increase a person's risk of suffering serious gastrointestinal side effects, including ulcers and severe bleeding. Severe bleeding can also be the result of Vioxx and interaction with Warfarin, an anticoagulant. Vioxx and interaction with oral corticosteroids may also increase a patient's risk of suffering an adverse event.

Vioxx and interaction that unfavorably affects the body can lead to a number of other physical injuries. The most common side effects caused by Vioxx include: high blood pressure, swelling and fluid retention, and serious gastrointestinal and cardiovascular complications. Vioxx and interaction in the gastrointestinal system can cause bleeding, ulcers, and perforations in the stomach and intestines. These side effects can occur in a Vioxx user at any time and often without warning. Several cases of Vioxx and interaction in elderly patients caused them to develop fatal gastrointestinal events.

Vioxx and interaction with the cardiovascular system also greatly increases a patient's chances of suffering a major, and potentially life threatening, complication. Studies indicate that patients taking Vioxx are twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Other Vioxx and interaction studies found that patients with a history of cardiovascular problems were five times more likely to suffer an adverse thrombotic cardiovascular event. Patients with advanced renal failure are also much more likely to suffer injury related to Vioxx and interaction complications. Vioxx and interaction in pregnancy can do injury to a developing fetus, and therefore Vioxx use is discouraged in pregnant patients.
