Wellbutrin® Birth Defect Risks
Until recently, Wellbutrin® was not generally considered to cause serious birth defects. New information from a recent study reported in the spring 2010 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology is causing researchers to take a second look at its potentially harmful effects on the newborn. Two defects have been found in a small number of babies born to women who took Wellbutrin early in their pregnancies. These are called left outflow heart defects. They are:
- Coarctation of the aorta — This is a narrowing of the aorta, the major blood vessel leaving the heart and delivering oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. When this occurs, depending upon its severity, the heart must work harder to pump blood around the body. It usually occurs as a birth defect, but may remain undetected until adulthood.
- Hypoplastic left heart syndrome — This is a complicated and rare critical heart defect. When this occurs the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped, putting great stress on the right side of the heart to pump blood both to the lungs and to the rest of the body. Special medications and heart surgery or a heart transplant are necessary to save the baby. Advances in medical care make this a more treatable condition today than previously.
