About Wellbutrin®
Four kinds of Wellbutrin® (bupropion) are prescribed: Wellbutrin®, Wellbutrin® XL, Wellbutrin® SR and Zyban. The first three are antidepressants. The fourth, Zyban, is used to help people stop smoking by curbing the craving for nicotine and limiting the effects of withdrawal.
The side effects of these different forms of bupropion are all similar. The most serious Wellbutrin® side effects are increased depression and suicidal thoughts. Other behavioral changes may include increased aggression. More common, less serious side effects are:
- Weight changes
- Stomach pain
- Insomnia
- Appetite changes
- Ringing in the ears
- Changes in taste
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Restlessness
- Dry mouth
- Headache
- Flushing
- Increased urination
- Weakness
- Increased perspiration
- Restlessness
- Nervousness
- Excitability
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
More serious side effects also can occur. If these happen, you should call your doctor immediately. These include:
- Suicidal thoughts or behavior
- New or worsening depression
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks
- Agitation
- Restlessness
- Angry or violent behavior
- Acting dangerously
- Mania (acting frenzied, abnormally excited or irritated)
- Hallucinations (visual or auditory)
- Paranoia
- Confusion
Birth Defects Caused by the Depression Medication
Wellbutrin® is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Category C pregnancy drug. This means that animal studies have shown the drug can produce birth defects but no well-controlled human studies have been done. The potential benefits, according to category C standards, may outweigh potential risks to the newborn.
That being said, however, a recent study reported in the spring of 2010 in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology showed a possible link between mothers taking Wellbutrin® and heart defects in the newborn infants. The heart defects included coarctation of the aorta and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The study's authors concluded that the connection needs to be further established by additional research.
SSRI Antidepressant Birth Defects Risk
Another class of antidepressants that are sometimes prescribed in conjunction with Wellbutrin® has been proven to increase the risk of heart birth defects in infants whose mothers take the medication while pregnant. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) might increase the risk of the following birth defects if taken by a pregnant mother:
- Heart defects
- Lung damage
- Cranial/skull defects
- Abdominal defects
Even if you only took Wellbutrin® during pregnancy and your child is born with some type of birth defect, you should consider speaking with an attorney. A solid link has not been proven, but it is possible that the antidepressant might increase a risk of some injuries to children who are exposed during fetal development.
