Xolair Side Effects

In February 2007, the Food and Drug Administration ordered a “black box” warning —the strongest type—to the label of the asthma drug Xolair (omalizumab). The call for the heightened warning came after the FDA received 48 reports of anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reaction associated with the drug. Symptoms of Anaphylaxis

The FDA warns that patients who are injected with Xolair have an increased risk of experiencing anaphylaxis within two to 24 hours, sometimes longer, after the injection. Even patients who have had previous injections of Xolair face the risk of anaphylaxis, the symptoms of which include:

• Narrowing of air passages
• Breathing difficulties
• Decrease in blood pressure
• Hives
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Swelling of the tongue or throat
• Loss of consciousness

Because anaphylaxis is potentially fatal, the FDA has asked healthcare professionals to monitor patients for at least two hours after being administered the drug. Patients are also encouraged to learn the symptoms of anaphylaxis and carry an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) to self-administer treatment in case of an emergency.

In addition to anaphylaxis, other Xolair side effects may include malignancy, viral infection, upper respiratory tract infection, and sinusitis.
