Yasmin® Lawyers in New Jersey

Women in New Jersey who are injured after taking the contraceptive medications known as Yaz or Yasmin® (Ocella) should consult with an experienced New Jersey defective drug attorney to find out if they are entitled to compensation for their injuries and losses. Although Yaz has been an effective form of birth control for years, numerous women have reported developing serious injuries after taking this medication.

In fact, mounting patient reports of Yaz injuries led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue an announcement that Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals – the sole manufacturer and distributor of Yaz – was going to have to start printing “Black Box Warnings” on all Yaz packaging. Black box warnings are the most serious FDA warnings, as they alert patients that a drug has the potential to cause fatal side effects.

Facts About Yaz

Yaz is generically known as drispirenone. Yaz and Yasmin® are produced and distributed by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. When taken as directed, Yaz is reported to be more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. Additionally, Yaz has been FDA approved in the treatment of moderate acne (in females over 14) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). As a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome, PMDD may cause insomnia, depression, heart palpitations and other painful symptoms.

Yaz is a 24/4-day pill that women should take at about the same time each day (with 4 hours of the same time. Like many modern medications Yaz has been found to cause a range of mild to severe side effects. It's vital that women discuss their complete medical history with their doctor before starting a course of Yaz.

Dangerous Yaz Side Effects

In most cases, women taking Yaz will experience mild side effects, if any. However, rarely, women have reported developing severe, life-threatening Yaz side effects, including:

  • blood clots
  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in which blood clots lodge in the body's deep vein (typically in the legs) and dangerously impair healthy circulation
  • depression
  • heart attack
  • hyperkalemia, excessive levels of potassium in the blood
  • liver damage
  • pulmonary embolism (PE), in which blood clots block the lung's airways and dangerously impair the ability to breathe
  • severe allergic reaction, marked by skin rash, facial swelling and/or difficulty breathing
  • stroke

To limit the risk of sustaining serious Yaz side effects, women should discuss their complete medical history with their doctors and undergo a complete physical exam on an annual basis. Women taking Yasmin® have the same health risks.
