Yasmin Side Effects

(800) 673-5138

Generically known as drospirenone, Yasmin birth control pills prevent pregnancy by making it nearly impossible for sperm to fertilize an egg and for an egg to attach to the uterine lining.

Also sold under the brand name, Yaz, Yasmin comes in a 24/4-pill dosage, meaning that the first 24 pills are active with the synthetic progestin (hormone) while the last 4 pills are placebos. When taken at the same time daily (within two hours of the set time), Yasmin is 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.

Regardless of its effectiveness, however, Yasmin has been found to cause some women to develop severe side effects. In the worst cases, Yasmin side effects can be life threatening.

Women who develop severe Yasmin side effects will likely be entitled to compensation for their injuries by pursuing a personal injury lawsuit against Berlex Laboratories, Inc., the maker and distributor of Yasmin.

Types of Serious Yasmin Side Effects

Although rare, severe Yasmin side effects can cause significant damage to a woman's health if left untreated. Some of the most serious side effects associated with taking Yasmin include:

    • blood clots
    • breast lumps
    • depression
    • heart attack
    • hypertension (high blood pressure) and/or high cholesterol
    • kidney damage
    • liver damage (characterized by jaundice, stomach pain and/or dark urine)
    • migraines
    • pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lung's airways that significantly impair breathing and re-oxygenation of the blood)
    • severe allergic reactions (marked by facial or tongue swelling, hives and breathing difficulties)
    • stroke
    • unexplainable vaginal bleeding

Women who start developing any of the above conditions may experience some combination of the following symptoms:

  • abdominal pain
  • pain, swelling and/or sensitivity on a localized area of the skin (indicating a blood clot in that area)
  • feelings of despair and hopelessness
  • chest pain
  • confusion and disorientation
  • faintness and lightheadedness
  • breathing difficulties
  • numbness on one side of the body
  • vision impairments (including blackened, blurry or double vision)

Should Yasmin patients develop any of the above symptoms, it's vital that they seek emergency medical care to prevent worsening health problems and stabilize their health.

Risk Factors for Severe Yasmin Side Effects

Women who are most likely to experience severe Yasmin side effects include those with a history of one or more of the following:

  • adrenal gland disorder
  • blood clotting disorders
  • contraception-induced jaundice
  • excessive alcohol consumption
  • heart disease and other cardiac issues
  • hormone-dependant cancers (such as breast or uterine cancer)
  • hormone therapy
  • hypertension and/or high cholesterol
  • kidney or liver disease
  • obesity or being overweight
  • smoking
  • stroke

Legal Help for Injured Yasmin Users

Women who are taking Yasmin as their form of birth control should familiarize themselves with the potential health risks associated with the medication so they will be able to recognize symptoms should they be affected. Any woman taking Yasmin should first seek medical attention to treat their injuries. Once their health is stabilized, injured Yasmin users should seek legal guidance from an experienced Yasmin lawyer to find out if they have a provable case against Berlex Laboratories, Inc.

Injured women may be eligible to recover compensation for damages including:

  • hospital bills
  • ongoing treatment costs
  • lost wages
