Produced by Berlex Laboratories, Inc., Yasmin® is an oral contraceptive medication that prevents pregnancy by changing a woman's cervical and uterine lining. When taken at the same time daily, Yasmin® is 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.
Yasmin®, which is generically known as drospirenone, can also be prescribed to treat:
- moderate acne (in menstruating women older than 14)
- premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of PMS marked by depression, concentration problems, difficulty sleeping and other debilitating symptoms
Yasmin® may also be sold under the brand name Yaz, a form of drospirenone manufactured and distributed by Bayer.
Yasmin® Side Effects
Despite its various applications, Yasmin® has been reported to cause a range of mild to serious side effects for some women. Milder Yasmin® side effects can include:
- abdominal pain
- acne
- back pain
- breast pain, inflammation and/or tenderness
- fluctuations in menstrual cycles
- headaches
- nausea and/or vomiting
- vaginal discharge or dryness
- weight changes (which can be either weight gain or loss)
- yeast infections
More rarely, women can develop severe, life-threatening Yasmin® side effects, including:
- blood clots

- hypertension (high blood pressure) and/or high cholesterol
- kidney disease
- liver damage (characterized by jaundice, stomach pain and/or dark urine)
- migraines
- pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lung's airways that significantly impair breathing and re-oxygenation of the blood)
- severe allergic reactions (marked by facial or tongue swelling, hives and breathing difficulties)
- stroke
- unexplainable vaginal bleeding
Women who start experiencing any of the above health complications should seek immediate medical attention to prevent more damage to their health.
Risk Factors for Yasmin® Side Effects
Some women will be more likely to develop serious Yasmin® side effects than others. Those with the highest risk include women with a history of:
- adrenal gland disorder
- blood clotting disorders
- contraception-induced jaundice
- excessive alcohol consumption
- heart disease and other cardiac issues
- hormone-dependant cancers (such as breast or uterine cancer)
- hormone therapy
- hypertension and/or high cholesterol
- kidney or liver disease
- obesity or being overweight
- smoking
- stroke
