Zelnorm Recall

Novartis Pharmaceuticals’ irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) drug Zelnorm was recalled from the U.S. market in March 2007 after being linked to a variety of adverse health events including heart attack, stroke, and an intestinal condition known as ischemic colitis. The Zelnorm recall follows a number of other regulatory actions by the Food and Drug Administration regarding the safety of the drug. Since its 2002 introduction to the market, Zelnorm has undergone several labeling changes to highlight its serious risks and side effects.

Zelnorm Problems Before the Recall

Prior to Zelnorm’s introduction to the U.S. market, critics were claiming the drug was unsafe. In March 2001, the consumer watchdog group Public Citizen filed a petition to block the drug’s approval by the FDA. However, the petition was disregarded and Zelnorm was approved for use in women with IBS (constipation predominant) in July 2002.

Despite Zelnorm’s history of problems, which prompted labeling changes in April 2004 and early March 2007, the drug was allowed to stay on the market. The Zelnorm recall was issued only after an extensive analysis of more than 18,000 patients participating in 29 studies revealed the following risks:

  • Severe diarrhea
  • Ischemic colitis (inflammation of the large intestine)
  • Other gastrointestinal side effects
  • Cardiovascular problems, particularly angina, stroke, and heart attack
