Zicam Cold Remedy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted consumers and members of the healthcare community to discontinue use of three Zicam Cold Remedy products, June 16, 2009. In the FDA’s warning letter, they also warned the makers of Zicam, Matrixx Initiative, to stop selling the defective products. In response to the warning, Matrixx recalled Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel.

Basis for the FDA Zicam Cold Remedy Warning

The Zicam warning was based on 130 consumer reports of anosmia (a condition marked by a total loss of smell) linked to Zicam use. In most cases, anosmia is a permanent condition that can also affect one’s ability to taste.

In addition to the 130 reports to the FDA, there have been a significant number of people who have claimed to have suffered from anosmia following their Zicam use. In fact, 340 Zicam lawsuits were filed and settled in 2006 — all of which involved cases of anosmia.

Matrixx Stands by Zicam Cold Remedy

Matrixx stands by its products, despite the FDA’s warning letter. They posted a letter on their website noting that they plan to meet with the FDA to “vigorously defend its scientific data.” Meanwhile, they are complying with the FDA and have withdrawn the suspicious products, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs and Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel.

How Effective is Zicam Cold Remedy?

Americans have been battling with the common cold for years, seeking a remedy that “really works.” However, there is no cure for the common cold. Companies like Matrixx have been trying to develop something to battle cold and flu symptoms for years: coughing, sneezing, headaches, etc. But, according to medical experts, the best treatment for the common cold is to wash the hands frequently to prevent the spreading of germs.

Have You Been Harmed by Zicam Cold Remedy?

If you’re among the millions of Americans who have used Zicam cold remedy and have experienced a loss of smell or another Zicam side effect, you should, of course, seek medical attention for your injuries. It is just as important, however, to seek legal help for your injuries and losses. You may be eligible to recover compensation by filing a Zicam lawsuit or joining a class action with other injured users.
