Zicam Recall

800-889-3898

A Zicam recall was announced in June 2009, following a warning letter that altered users of its link to complete loss of smell. Issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Zicam warning letter was based on 130 confirmed reports of anosmia, a condition marked by complete loss of smell.

Even though the FDA’s warning letter wasn’t distributed until June 16, 2009, there have been hundreds of Zicam users who have filed suit against the makers of the cold remedy medication, Matrixx Initiatives, since it hit the U.S. market in 1999. In fact, Matrixx settled 340 Zicam lawsuits (totaling $11.9 million) in 2006.

Basis for the Zicam Recall

Sales of Zicam Cold Remedy dropped off following the FDA’s warning letter, encouraging Matrixx to remove three of its products from the shelves. The three recalled Zicam products are:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size

The FDA warned Matrixx to stop selling the products to consumers. If they want to continue selling their products, they must seek FDA approval.

Zicam Recall Could Cost Matrixx Millions

Since the FDA warning and the Zicam recall, Matrixx shares have dropped significantly, almost by 70 percent. And, according to Matrixx’s acting president, William Helmelt, the company is expecting a $5 million loss on the recalled products and another $5 million in new marketing efforts to reach out to American consumers.

Have You Been Affected by Recalled Zicam?

If you or a loved one has suffered anosmia or another Zicam side effect, you might be eligible to seek compensation from Matrixx. You may be eligible to recover compensation via an individuals Zicam lawsuit or by joining a class action lawsuit.

Anosmia: Life-Long Effects

Individuals who are affected by Zicam-caused anosmia will be affected for the rest of their lives. Loss of taste is often associated with loss of smell. Smell and taste loss has been linked to depression, malnutrition, and loss of early warning sign to dangerous situations including fires, poisonous fumes and poisonous gas.

If you’ve developed anosmia after using zinc-based Zicam, Matrixx should be held accountable. By contacting us, we will connect you with an experienced Zicam lawyer who will evaluate your case and fight to recover the full amount of compensation you are entitled to.
