Zicam Side Effects

800-889-3898

Zicam side effects have been the source of hundreds of lawsuits against the makers of the over-the-counter cold remedy, Matrixx Initiatives. The zinc-based medication can be taken as either a nasal spray or tablet and comes in both adult and children doses.

Zicam Side Effects: Anosmia

One of the most severe side effects linked to Zicam Cold Remedy is complete loss of smell, a condition known as anosmia. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more than 130 people have reported to have allegedly suffered from anosmia after using Zicam since 1999.

While some reports indicate a loss of smell upon the first use of the product, other users say their injuries came about after several uses. Either way, the loss of smell in most cases, will be permanent. In addition to loss of smell, affected individuals will also experience loss of taste.

Injuries Lead to Zicam Recall

The FDA issued a warning letter in June 2009, alerting consumers of the risk of developing anosmia after using the Zicam drug. Following the warning, the makers of the medication pulled three of its products from U.S. shelves, including:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size

Other Zicam Side Effects

Zicam users have reported to have suffered side effects, other than anosmia, while using Zicam. Some of the more common, temporary side effects of Zicam may include:

  • Hives on the face, arms and legs
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Eye discomfort and irritation
  • Nasal discomfort
  • Ear discomfort
  • Sinus headache
