Zoloft® and Congenital Birth Defects

(800) 407-9146

Zoloft® is an antidepressant drug manufactured by Pfizer. It belongs in a class of drugs called SSRI drugs. Drugs like Zoloft® work by manipulating serotonin levels in the brain, which can alleviate depression. Unfortunately, the altered body chemistry has also been shown to effect fetal development in pregnant women. The result is congenital birth defects.

Zoloft® Warnings

There are several FDA warnings regarding Zoloft®. The label contains a "black box" warning, the most serious warning that the FDA issues, about possible suicides resulting from its use. The FDA also lists it as a pregnancy category C drug. This means Zoloft® can be the cause of congenital defects in newborns.

Because the black box warning does not include the Zoloft® birth defects risk, many users may be unaware of the risks of combining Zoloft® and pregnancy. It is also noted in warnings that the effect of breast-feeding while using Zoloft® is unknown.

Zoloft® Heart Defects

Some of the more serious congenital birth defects associated with Zoloft® involve congenital heart defects. It has been reported Zoloft® birth defects include a congenital malformation in which one or more holes are found in the heart. Conditions such as this can lead to congenital heart failure.

By definition congenital birth defects are present at birth, and many of these birth defects will present symptoms very early on in the infant's life. However, some conditions are not detected for years.

Symptoms of Birth Defects

  • Baby is underweight due to problems feeding
  • Delayed physical development
  • A bluish tint to the skin, caused by lack of oxygen
  • Fainting

It is important to consult with a pediatrician over any changes in a baby's health, and detection of a possible birth defect should be addressed immediately.
