A Zyprexa claim is a legal suit brought against the maker's of this prescription medication (Eli Lilly) by those who have suffered harmful Zyprexa side effects. An individual who files a Zyprexa claim must prove that their injuries were caused by Zyprexa use. If successful in doing so, plaintiff(s) in a Zyprexa claim may be able to receive compensation for all related damages including medical expenses, loss of income, and psychological suffering.
Zyprexa is a top-selling prescription medication in a class of drugs developed in the 1990s known as atypical antipsychotics. These drugs were developed because original antipsychotic drugs had a high rate of causing serious side effects. Zyprexa was approved by the FDA in 1996 to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Zyprexa also has a number of off-label uses, including treatment for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, which have not been approved by the FDA.
Since this drug was first approved, several research studies have shown that Zyprexa use can cause serious and life threatening side effects. Before the drug gained approval from the FDA, a researcher reported that approximately two-thirds of all clinical trial participants in pre-approval clinical trials had dropped out of the trials before they were complete due to serious side effects and other complications.
In 2001, the Australian researchers discovered over three hundred cases of Zyprexa side effects in patients, including diabetes and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. In 2001 an article published in the American Health Association medical journal stated that patients taking Zyprexa were ten times more likely to become diabetic compared to the general population. In 2002, both the Japanese and British governments issued strong Zyprexa warnings and restricted the use of this medication in some patient populations.
In 2002 Duke University researched Zyprexa side effects reports catalogued on the FDA's MedWatch database. It is estimated that only ten percent of all adverse drug side effects are reported to this database. Researchers found nearly 300 cases of Zyprexa treatment-emergent diabetes, most of which developed within the first six months of Zyprexa use. In addition to these cases of diabetes, one hundred others developed a serious diabetes complication called ketoacidosis, more than twenty people developed pancreatitis, and twenty three people had died as result of Zyprexa side effects.
In addition to these serious side effects, research is now showing that elderly patients who take Zyprexa for Alzheimer's and dementia are two times more likely to suffer a stroke or fatal health complications, compared to those who do not take Zyprexa. Despite this growing evidence about the defectiveness of this prescription drug, Eli Lilly consistently maintains that Zyprexa benefits far outweigh any potential risks. Eli Lilly has taken no action to protect consumers from the harmful side effects associated with their product. Those injured as a result of Zyprexa use have the legal right to seek compensation for their losses through a Zyprexa claim.
