Zyprexa® indications information communicates important facts about the approved uses of Zyprexa®, recommended doses, and Zyprexa® administration. Zyprexa® indications include uses of this prescription drug that have been demonstrated efficient through clinical trials. The results of pre-marketing clinical trials such as these are evaluated by the FDA prior to approval of any prescription medication. The FDA not only evaluated the proposed Zyprexa® indications, they also analyzed the results of clinical trials to determine the possible side effects and other risks associated with this prescription medication, as they do with any drug prior to approval.
Zyprexa® indications include the treatment of schizophrenia, acute monotherapy, maintenance monotherapy, and combination therapy for bipolar disorder, and for the agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These are the Zyprexa® indications that have been evaluated and approved by the FDA. In addition to these approved Zyprexa® indications, Zyprexa® may also be prescribed by doctors for "off-label" uses.
Zyprexa® indications show that this atypical antipsychotic drug is effective in treating the positive and negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia. A six week pre-marketing clinical trial was conducted to test the efficacy of Zyprexa® in treating patients with schizophrenia. Zyprexa® indications information states that physicians choosing to keep a schizophrenic patient on Zyprexa® for an extended period of time should evaluate the long term usefulness of this drug for the individual patient.
Zyprexa® indications also include monotherapy and combination therapy for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Acute monotherapy Zyprexa® indications are made for those patients who display manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. Zyprexa® indications show that using Zyprexa® alone is often effective in treating patients with bipolar disorder. Zyprexa® indications also show that Zyprexa® can be administered in conjunction with lithium or divalproex treatments in order to treat patients with bipolar disorder.
Zyprexa® indications also show that this drug is efficient in treating the agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Agitation is defined in the field of psychology as, "excessive motor activity associated with the feeling of inner tension." This symptom can interfere with therapy and can complicate the symptoms of a patient's condition. An intramuscular injection of Zyprexa® is recommended for these Zyprexa® indications. Zyprexa® is also available in regular and disintegrating tablet form.
The pre-marketing studies conducted to determine these Zyprexa® indications did not yield substantial evidence of serious side effects associated with Zyprexa® use. Post marketing research, however, has found that Zyprexa® use can cause serious and life-threatening side effects. These risks should be discussed with a doctor. Zyprexa® indications also show an increased risk of side effects for certain patient populations, which should also be discussed with a doctor prior to commencing treatment.
