Zyprexa® Injuries

Zyprexa® injuries can result in serious adverse health conditions and even death. Victims of Zyprexa® injuries have the legal right to seek compensation under tort, or personal injury, law against the manufacturers of this defective product. Eli Lilly has been aware that their atypical antipsychotic prescription drug causes Zyprexa® injuries in hundreds of users, yet has not taken the necessary steps to mitigate these risks.

Zyprexa® was approved by the FDA to treat schizophrenia in 1996 and bipolar disorder in 2000. Zyprexa® has also been prescribed by doctors for off-label uses including anorexia and dementia in elder patients. Despite warnings about the risks of suffering Zyprexa® injuries, this is the best selling antipsychotic drug prescribed in the United States. Eli Lilly enjoys $2.6 billion in annual sales revenue for Zyprexa® sales in the US alone.

Serious and potentially life threatening Zyprexa® injuries can include: diabetes, ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, and hyperglycemia. Hundreds of victims have suffered these insulin-related Zyprexa® injuries and dozens have even died as a result. A 2002 Duke University study found that 289 patients had suffered diabetes-related Zyprexa® injuries and 23 had died as a result. Both the British and Japanese governments have issued major warnings about Zyprexa® injuries. The FDA requested that Eli Lilly include warning statements about Zyprexa® injuries on all product packaging, which are now included for hyperglycemia and diabetes risks.

Eli Lilly also warned doctors in 2004 that certain patient populations may be at a greater risk of suffering Zyprexa® injuries. A clinical trial found that elderly patients taking Zyprexa® for dementia were twice as likely to die or suffer stroke related Zyprexa® injuries as compared to the placebo groups. Factors that increase a patient's risk of suffering these Zyprexa® injuries include being over the age of 80, sedation, lung problems, and the use of benzodiazepines. Warnings about these Zyprexa® injuries have not been included on patient product information.

In addition to the aforementioned Zyprexa® injuries, patients can also suffer a number of other adverse health events. Symptoms of Zyprexa® injuries can include gastrointestinal problems, motor problems (i.e. uncontrollable movement in the face and extremities), seizures, weight gain, fainting, dizziness, and more serious conditions like neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and tardive dyskinesia. Patients with a history of liver or heart problems, high blood pressure, epilepsy, glaucoma, or enlarged prostate may also be at a greater risk of suffering Zyprexa® injuries. The use of certain medications can also increase a patient's risk of suffering from Zyprexa® injuries. Blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, muscle relaxants and pain medications are just some of the medicines that can react with Zyprexa®.

If you or a loved one is taking Zyprexa® and/or have suffered Zyprexa® injuries, you may wish to speak to a qualified and experienced legal professional regarding your rights and options in a lawsuit.
