Zyprexa® Risks

(800) 889-9248

Patients who are considering or currently taking Zyprexa® should speak to their health care provider to determine if the intended benefits of this medication outweigh the serious Zyprexa® risks associated with use of this atypical antipsychotic medication. Zyprexa® is a top-selling drug produced by Eli Lilly that was approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in 1996. Since then, numerous reports of serious Zyprexa® risks have been made by experts and other researchers across the globe.

Prior to this drug's FDA approval, a researcher discovered that Zyprexa® risks are so great that two thirds of pre-approval clinical trial participants were unable to complete the trial due to harmful Zyprexa® side effects and other complications. He also found that one in every 145 trial participants who had taken Zyprexa® died before completing their trials. This data regarding Zyprexa® risks was reportedly made known to FDA officials but never made available to the public.

In 2001, government drug regulators from Australia received over three hundred reports of Zyprexa® risks that led to harmful side effects such as diabetes and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. In 2001 the American Medical Association published a letter from leading health care professionals about serious Zyprexa® risks. These experts reported that patients taking Zyprexa® were ten times more likely to develop diabetes and related complications compared to the general population. After the Japanese and British governments received similar reports about Zyprexa® risks, they issued strong warnings and restricted the use of this medication.

In 2002 a Duke University study also showed serious Zyprexa® risks. They discovered nearly three hundred cases of Zyprexa® treatment-emergent diabetes, most of which developed in patients who had been taking Zyprexa® for less than six months. In addition to these serious Zyprexa® risks, the researchers also found one hundred cases of patients who had developed ketoacidosis as a result of Zyprexa® use, twenty two cases of Zyprexa®-related pancreatitis, and twenty three patients who died as a result of Zyprexa® side effects.

This prompted the FDA to finally take action and demand that Eli Lilly add a strong warning to all Zyprexa® product information about these serious Zyprexa® risks. Eli Lilly complied, but has consistently maintained that the intended benefits of Zyprexa® outweigh the Zyprexa® risks. In 2004 even more Zyprexa® risks were indicated for patients taking this medication to treat Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Researchers found that elderly patients taking Zyprexa® were twice as likely to suffer a serious stroke or fatal injury, compared to patients not exposed to Zyprexa® risks. Eli Lilly again issued warning statements about these serious Zyprexa® risks, but has done nothing to protect consumers from life threatening Zyprexa® side effects.

If you are concerned about Zyprexa® risks, you may wish to discuss these concerns with you health care professionals.
