There has not been a Zyprexa withdrawal issued, however there are still safety concerns associated to the schizophrenia drug. There have been reports of hyperglycemia and diabetes in Zyprexa patients that has resulted in ketoacidosis and coma. Concern has been heightened in other countries as well and no Zyprexa withdrawals have occurred overseas but warnings have been issued.
In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare issued Zyprexa emergency safety information on April 16, 2002 after becoming concerned with fatal outcomes of Zyprexa use. British authorities also did not make such strong decisions like issuing a Zyprexa withdrawal but warned of diabetes risks with Zyprexa use after receiving hyperglycemia and diabetes reports leading to ketoacidosis and coma in some instances. The Public Citizen is not pleased with the U.S. response to Zyprexa adverse events and while not necessarily pushing for a Zyprexa withdrawal, the group believes the FDA has not even properly warned physicians and patients of Zyprexa risks.
